Who Am I?

In the immortal worlds of the endlessly talented Doctor Seuss:

I am Sam. I am Sam. Sam I am.

Green Eggs and Ham by Doctor Seusss

To be frank (little F, as mentioned I am Sam, not Frank), I don’t believe it matters, particularly in relation to this module. We are not objective creatures. Humans are subjective. I believe this to be a defining character of our being. So, with that in mind, this is who I am to some who know me:

  • L.A. Very genuine and very confident in himself despite people’s opinions.
  • C.I. The most supportive friend I could ask for.
  • N.P. I would also say you’re a huge narcissist and you bounce well off of other people’s energy. And I would say you’re funny and a big old loser.
  • B. T. (sister) Extroverted flamboyant young man, always down to drink.
  • K. T. (Also sister) He knows who he is and is not afraid of it.
  • J.F. Nice bloke, funny trousers.

So, let’s take a look at that, shall we? From what I gather, the general consensus is that I am who I am and happy to be it. What light does that shine on this query? None. Nada. Zilch.

I am Sam. A construct. Each and every person will think of me differently. To some, I am kind. To some, I am arrogant. To those who knew me in secondary school, I am that odd short kid who wore black eyeliner, black nail polish and a Black Parade jacket.

I am an angsty teenage poet who just happens to no longer be a teenager. I am a teacher and a big brother. I am a son, I am a grandson, I am a cousin and a nephew. I am an author and, by extension, a murderer, a hopeless romantic, an enemy of the state, a hero, a devil and a god.

Who do I think I am?

Well, that’s a damn good question and one I’m not sure I can answer. Depends on what day you ask.

I think, more than anything else, I’m a writer. I believe in the power of words. My voice has always been very important to me and I believe I have something to say. Something worth listening to. I believe in love, romance, passion, kindness, optimism and most importantly, hope.

I have hope that there’s a better world. I have hope that humans can do better, that we will be better. I have hope that we will grow and unite and move past the bullshit that inhibits us. And I believe that language is the route of hope and the route of redemption.

So, Hi, I’m Sam. Nice to meet you.
